Yoopers in Disney - 2014

So the time has come...in a long line of Michiganders flocking South for a visit with cartoon and movie characters, this particular Yooper is no different. I have officially taken time off from work for a 2 week visit during hurricane season. The clones are excited!

So, what are the pertinent details? We leave Gods Country, via automobile, on the 26th of September and leave to head back on the 10th. In that time we will be staying with Yooper's parental units in The Villages. Plans are to go to Disney and Universal Studios (for the eldest clone, who is a monster fan of Harry Potter).

This is a blog for tips and tricks, info and whatever, PLUS a spot where we can plan a Bunker get-together. Since I am a foreigner in a tropical land (do I need my passport?), initial thoughts were for everyone to come somewhere close to the Villages...World of Beer perhaps. It's not every day a Floridian gets to gawk at a Yooper, so make it happen!

If anything changes for some reason, all updates will be posted here.

A must see is the Fantasmic. An absolutely amazing show. Family friendly too. Only shown at night.

A few words of warning for ya', Yoop--CROWDED and WARM.

I'm about over it. Been goin' since 1971. Only go there for the food now. The Carciofi white Pizza in Epcot at Italy at the restaurant in the very back is da bomb!!! Fontina cheese, artichokes and truffle oil!!!!!!! They say you need reservations but if you go early like 5PM, they take stand-bys. Waited all of 10 mins.

We always love to eat at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom (on the left, headed to Adventure Land.) Delicious Buffet and Characters for the kids. Pricey, but worth it.

Mark--is Fantasmic at Disney (Hollywood/MGM/whatevertheycallthemnow) Studios?

Yoop, This blog is an excellent idea, and should provide you with plenty of useful tips and information about Disney, Florida, and even traveling in the South. My wife insisted we all go as a family this summer (older daughter going off to college so she figured it was kind of a last chance for childhood thing). To optimize your time for maximum experience with finite money and schedule you should absolutely plan ahead, and have a back-up plan, and this blog will help you do that. Please understand this review is from the technical perspective. I'm a technical type person and enjoyed the Engineering aspects of these things. I'm not much into the campy artsy fluff.

    I learned three things:
    1) Bring at least three times as much money as you can reasonably afford, then bring even more.
    2) Get to all Parks as early as possible. Hit the favorite rides ASAP while the lines are short. Within an hour or two of opening the lines will exceed an hour wait. (Besides after 11:00 it starts to get really hot so head back to the hotel to wait out the heat. Hit the rides you missed later that evening after it cools off again.)
3)Bring several bottles and flasks of "Daddy's magic potion" that prevents daddy from going absolutely stark raving postal! (Vodka or Gin in a water bottle will get you through most of the security searches)

We visited Magic kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood studios, Downtown Disney, and then Universal Studios. One park each day. We stayed at "Katani Village" (one of the Disney hotels) and could ride shuttles to any park we wanted. That was convenient, and I didn't have to worry about getting a DWI. The Daughter's loved that 'there were giraffes in the back yard'. Bring your own food and drinks (we did) or be prepared to spend up to $6 for a Coke in the hotel gift shop.

There was a nice stunt show using tricked out cars in the Hollywood park, Lots of smoke and fire. The kids liked that one. (check show times, only two or three a day) Youngest insisted on riding "tower of terror". There is also a great Star Wars themed 3D experience ride. DO that one for sure. The Aerosmith Rock and Roll Roller coaster is another technical treat. They start that ride with a linear accelerator, not gravity.

The haunted house in Magic Kingdom has some nice holograms. Ride the monorail, it's a great place to stand in air conditioning for a brief time. If you're mechanically inclined there is a pair of live steam trains running around the original park. Take the wife on Space Mountain, and sit in the back of the car right behind her if at all possible.

The light and fireworks show in EPCOT was highly convenient. (while everyone's watching that, you can pull several drags from your flask without worrying about anyone seeing you.)

In Universal (not Disney) the younger one loved the Harry potter sections. The older daughter liked the "Spider man ride".

Plan ahead, be flexible to adjust for the unpredictable, and do whatever it takes to keep momma happy. Enjoy the time with your family. In the end it's really all we have. (Just ask Squawk)

If you're going to Universal, you may as well get the 2 park pass and check out Islands of Adventure which is on the same grounds. Barkeep mentioned the long lines - I've never been down the time of year you're going so perhaps it's "off" season and it won't be as crowded?? Fast passes are an option too. They'll cost you a bit but allow you to basically jump to the front of any line.

Is there a chance there could be a launch while you are in Florida , That would be cool for the kids ,

Be there when the parks open. Take a break during the heat of the day (especially for Yoopers), go to pool or take naps or something like that. Go back in the evening and close the parks. They are so different at night it's almost like another park and the night time shows are fantastic.

What are kid ages again? I forgot.

I think that is worth re-posting. ...unless it isn't.

But if it is, I'll B.U.M.P. it again tomorrow.

Best advice is to just plan on getting a break in starting just before lunch until a couple hours before dinner. This way, you can avoid paying for lunch at the parks. And, oh yeah, it's really hot during that part of the day and the lines are longest.
Or nothing like that at all.

What,? Oooohh oh "LeggoLand"! I've heard the lines get longer after lunch. Go take a nap or swim, and go back after dark.

Haven't had an excuse to go there but I hear it is fantastic. But I see the temps are starting to climb back up a week from now.
