So it is not just me that has appliance Gremlins!

I just replaced my recalled and repaired Samsung washer, that still cost me $150 for labor to repair and then died. Now the fridge top ice maker doesn't make ice. No problem, fixed those before, but NOOOOOOO. It is not a single valve assembly, it is all 3 and the base mount for the filter to boot! So, $170 bucks to fix one stuck valve, nope. They can get ice from the lower unit and move on. Friggin establishment puke designs.......

Had some excitement last night here in the hood. Whilst making a beer run to the neighbors garage for the spares, we discovered the 18 pack backup brews had mysteriously disappeared from the garage fridge. Well, we just got finished watching the movie Invincible, which was actually quite good except it was a Philly team in the storyline. But I digress. So we set off to discover what happened to the last beer we had available. Once I scootered back to my garage and awaited the other neighborhood tribesmen, I heard young voices in the other neighbors bushes next to the road. Now having just finished watching a movie where the older walk on player was running 4.5 40's, I felt I could probably come close. So upon seeing them now and how they hid from an approaching car, I proceeded to kick it into high gear for a chase as my other hoodfolk approached on the golf cart. Well, my high gear is not as high as it used to be and I probably was running a comparable 10.5 40, but I came dam close as they fled and actually jumped out of their shoes when I came screaming around the end of the bushes uttering some expletives along with "your mine now @%#^ %&^$! "

Well they boogied around the house and by the time I got back to my scooter to put the chase in a real high gear, they were pretty much gone.

Now we have to call the police and involve other neighbors since I pretty much woke most everyone up. That said, we had a pair of Michael Jordan shoes and a Rayban sunglasses case (evidently our bad teens are affluent) as hard evidence. We had police dogs come and search along with patrols that actually apprehended a pair of teens that met the description a little ways off. Unfortunately, I was having a difficult time bringing up my CCTV history to make a verified match. It had to be an equipment problem and nothing to do with adrenaline and beer, right?

Needless to say, I have packaged my video evidence of the punks running through the yard with some blurry slow guy chasing them and submitted the 4 cameras movie evidence along with the corresponding necessary codec for playback on a CD.

We shall see if anything comes of this as it was suggested we prosecute if they can pair up the evidence. The reason was that these kids would probably not learn a lesson if they did not get penalized and move on to bigger problems. I would probably share that thought, along with being happy I did not get my hands on them as I would have probably ended up on the wrong side of the law for all the wrong reasons.

Regardless, I don't think they will pick this corner of the hood again for some reason.

Oh I'm with ya there OSS. Planned an designed in failures on appliances is obvious if you keep records.

I have a name brand fridge that will stop making ice precisely every two point five years. It's always the same problem. There is a little electronic eye that tells the computer when the ice bin is full. Now this little eye has a couple of LEDs with it, and using some simple trouble shooting codes you can tell that three blinks then pause means it's dead again. The eye comes attached to another brain board (not the main fridge brain board) and the replacement is rather simple. BUT you can't buy just that board. They come in pairs: Both the sending unit board and the receiver board (eye) must be changed. ...according to the manufacturer anyway.

You see by having to purchase the set (as one part number) they can charge more money $$$. The installation is easy, and clearly designed to keep some lucky repairman (or men / women / TBD / not sure yet / may change next week / just confused enough not to know for certain...) very well employed changing simple electronic boards. Strange that the boards always seem to fail at exactly 2.5 years though. You don't suppose they have an internal timer timed to fail at 2.5 years, do ya? Otherwise the fridge runs great. Design wise, I think a simple level switch would have been more reliable and cheaper. ...but that's why they don't let me design appliances.

I found an appliance parts store that will sell me stuff at a reasonable price. I'm in there so frequently they think I'm an independent repairman.

UPDATE: Tankles water heater is up and running again. Just have to clean off the flame sensors every two years or so. hmmmmm,,, There's that 'two years' thing again. You don't suppose,,,, nah. couldn't be. Dryer is still Tango Uniform. I'll get on that tomorrow, unless I don't. I need a drink. BBL, or not.

We have already been thru the icemaker debacle on a 2 year old VERY expensive frig. I mean....... really???!!! I paid how much for this beauty, to have a defective piece of sh*t icemaker?

Luckily, my LG washer and dryer stacks are plugging along like champs.

Right now my problem is relatively mundane. One of my 3 or 4 year old self-installed security cameras is frozen on a black and white (not color) image. I have tried resetting, I have tried re-logging in, I have tried powering off and then on. I have pushed buttons that I don't know what they mean. But, I will endeavor to persevere.

I am rather proud of myself on fixing my Lexus AC. All I could see was dollar signs in front of my eyes. My AC quit coming on when I started the car (spoiled, right? First world problems.) So, I listened to it and heard this cachunk, cachunk coming from the glove box. And my outside air/ recirc. air buttons were going on and off. So, I got the 2" thick (I kid you not) manual and found that the fan and filter were behind the glovebox. I figured maybe it was dirty. So, I took everything out and pulled out the panel in the back and VOILA! But when I took it out, the little tabs on the carrier (plastic frame) were broken off and it was wiggly. One tab fell into the fan. So, I ordered a new carrier (took forever to find out what they called it so I could actually order it) and it only cost like $15. Cleaned the fan-fold filter, installed it in the new carrier, and snapped it into place--and held my breath. Much to my relief, it worked!!!!

Already fed the critters, now fixin' our dinner. Gotta go.

Dangit LF scooped me. I was in a corn hole tournament and didn't pay attention. Good Job LF!

Bart, My Eemax tankless has been a bi%_^% since I put it in. Electric, not gas, but consistent resister failure on the original boards was fixed with a better one soldered in after failure. Like 2 bucks for 3 of them, less my time. They even sent me transformer boards, but why bother with rewiring if it only takes a couple of minutes to replace a toasted resistor.

I gotta check the icemaker sensor, as I have only determined nothing was frozen and no water is getting to it. Hence valve excuse. The back up bottom unit make it easy to be less accurate

G16 is gonna be fun Cone.

From the "Fault Line" (my snarky new byline/code name, because I am sitting atop a major fault line in the "ring of fire" known for its activity)
Just checking in. Our weather was influenced by a Tropical Storm headed to China via Vietnam. We got some rain bands of it, but nary a breeze which would have been nice. This is an anomaly: It is calm here all the time. Even during thunderstorms, no breezes. However, a typhoon will blow a perfectly good house off of a hill, or so I am told. Filipinos are not exempt in their tendency to "stretch" the truth a little while telling stories.
Even so, there is no wind here. I imported some using a fan.

Wedding is a few days away. It will start at 0930 Saturday. Preparations are still going on at a feverish pace and the main boss is suffering from being a micro-manager, as they all do, not trusting to hand off the baton.
I am watching and handing out money. But I am still sick (ish) so I am excused.

I have been there Bart and OSS. In Colorado, the guy I was working for had his truck stolen. We got it on tape and we know who did it. We handed the evidence over to the police who have done nothing so far. A police "aide" came by and swore the detective is poring over the details and will make an arrest soon. But I knew better.
I hope you do better there.
I was going to talk about the appliances here, but it's too ridiculous.

It's noon here and time for a well-earned nap.

    Hang in there.

    More later...
    More or less.

NEVER turn your back on a Mid-Atlantic ITCZ seed...unless Lib officially declares it a "fish!"

Bachelor party? these puritans won't even let me kiss the bride after they pronounce us man and waif. (she is little)
I did manage to have a cold beer today, and I think that may be it! Then I took a nap. It is not a bad BP for an old guy living in sweltering heat.

My snot nosed cold has gone down into my chest and with my deep voice (Filipinos all have high voices like the singer on Rascal flats) they can't tell if I'm talking or puking. They have never heard of Nyquil and they handed me their miracle pill called paracetomol. It sounds powerful, but it is only acetemeniphen or fong I cant remember how to spell it.
    It doesn't help.
But my finacee went to the big city of Ormoc and is bringing back some rum. (for medicinal purposes of course) but during treatment, I may have my second bachelor party, or another nap. It's getting dark now (6PM) It gets light at 5am.
    So I must be off.
Keep em on the straight and narrow Cone..!

Even if they don't we'll probably start up anyway because it's what we do

Good Morning All, or afternoon, or evening, or night, depending on what side of the international date line juan resides at the moment. It is not raining at the moment, but I am sure that will change.

Cone, I have a question since there are 2 whirlies out there now do we have to double up on Option #2 practices.

3K hope you get to feeling better before the big day.

I missed out on the appliance cussing. Mine is warshing machines. I am on my 3rd one in 5 years, The first one was a kenmore and it caught on fire about a month after the year warranty expired. It just burned up a board and some wires. Cussing.

No 2, was a Maytag it started acting up 6 months after we bought it and every 6 months after that. It would just fill up and drain, no spin or agitation, other then agitating me. I did buy an extended warranty. which I hate doing, on that one. They would come out a week or so after calling. While I made trips to a laundry mat. More cussing.

I had enough the last time it went out the guy said that the new machines need to be in an air conditioned climate because the eewmidity messes with the circuit boards. So I bought a small window unit for the utility room, it worked for about 6 months and started acting up again. Still cussing.

I finally said the he!! with it and bought a speed queen a couple of months ago, it has mechanical controls and I know how to fix them, plus a 3 year warranty, and a 5 year on the motor and 10 in the transmission. So far I am pleased. Less cussing.

Over my rant, I feel better.

Now some late breakfast, Aislinn I would like a plate of cheesy ham and hash brown casserole, and a glass of apple juice, please and thank you.

Fixing your own stuff is way cheaper than having someJuan else do it. I started fixing my own stuff when I could no longer trust the mechanics to do the job right. It's way toooooo frustrating to pay somejuan good money to fix something, only to later find they didn't do it right. When your families safety is depending on that job being done correctly (brakes or steering on a car) it had darn well better be done right. So I do it all myself now.

I know not everyone trusts themselves to do the job, and may not have confidence in themselves to do it. So okay, for those nervous people go ahead and pay somejuan you trust. But I know deep inside you CAN do it. There is plenty of help available, and parts are way cheaper on-line than buying from the dealer.

Do yourselves a favor. Next item of yours to go on the fritz, do the research (on-line) and see how easy it is to fix yourself. You may be surprised how easy it is, and save a bunch of $$$ doing it.

OSS, My Tankless is a Reem RTGL74PVN. Nat Gas. It's rated at about 90k btuh, but I've never had to push it that hard. Frankly I love the thing. My old heater was a single 80 gal tank electric. That thing SUCKED the power ($$$). The Reem tankless paid for itself far faster than my economic estimate forecast. I forecast a 4 yr payback, it was making money in 3 yrs. Technically it's working fine, and I love the thing. My wife and daughters can run three showers and a couple of washing machines all at the same time, and this thing just chugs along with no trouble. That old electric tank used to empty after two showers and took hours to recover.

Downside? I only have to clean the flame sensors about every two years or so. It's about a two hour process of careful disassembly, light sanding, then careful re-assembly. Seems they could have found a better way to sense the flame. Maybe a thermocouple or something like that. (There's that designed in two year item to support a service call.) But otherwise I'd not hesitate to recommend it. It has far exceeded my expectations for price and quality.

Right on repairs Bart. I have been having fun with many folks helping them replace their non-replacable batteries in the phones/tablets for a while. That is a 2 year or less item for certain. Just did some iphones for 8 bucks this weekend. Their other option was buying a new $600+ phone like they told them at the store. $8 and its like new. I only accept option #2 for payment

Here is a good story. I am not so sure the dog had intented on saving anything, but he did in the end.

OH Yes Cone, I heard rumor of the virtual bachelor party. It's still in the planning phase. Not sure if we should attempt it here or open up a separate blog entry. As far as the concerns of the BBCL, I believe either Ais, Lib, Tulsa, or perhaps LF should plan a "Hen party" to keep them all occupied at the same time.

AH ha! Unplug, and plug it back in! AKA; turn it off and back on again. That is known as repair procedure number XP32-Jc, and became wildly popular with the advent of more and more electronics in our everyday appliances. XP32-Ja is as old as the hills, and nearly as simple "kick it". It was quite popular during the industrial and steam engine revolution.

Procedure XP32-Jb is almost as popular (but far less satisfying) "Hit it". This procedure was immortalized in the film classic Star Wars by the character Han Solo when he successfully repaired his space ship the Millennium Falcon.

Be careful using procedure XP32-Ja (kicking it). Jack Daniels (yes, THAT Jack Daniels) died from it. He died of complications and an infection from a broken toe/toes/foot. His office safe failed to open one morning. Something was screwed up with the tumblers and combination, and/or it was user error. NoJuan knows for sure which, but he got frustrated and kicked it. ...and now you know the rest of the story.

LF. Those cameras have a sensor in them to detect light. If it happens again, try holding your hand over the front to see if you hear a click switching to BW. There are lots if inexpensive compatible replacements in Amazon also. I just replaced a $500 PTZ for less than $100 and a regular analog camera for about 25. Just be cautious of power wiring differences.

    Thanks, Oss, will do.

It was stuck on an image from a while ago AND it was in black and white. It wasn't a live feed, just a still picture, but the infrared lights were on at night. Very strange. I turned the DVR in the house off and on, and decided what the heck, I needed to turn off the camera, too.

My husband tried the "kick it" and "bang on it" strategy on my daughter's tricycle 35 years ago. It was quite a sight--- He ended up buying a new one--and reading the instructions the second time around.
